Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing and corrosive acid.Nitric acid is easily soluble in water, and its solution is colorless and transparent at room temperature. The properties of different concentrations of aqueous solutions vary.Commercial concentrated nitric acid is a constant boiling mixture with a mass fraction of 69.2%(about 16mol/L).If the mass fraction is sufficiently large(commercial concentration is over 95%),it is called fuming nitric acid.Nitric acid is prone to visible light decomposition and should be stored in a dark place in a brown bottle.Contact with reducing agents is strictly prohibited.Nitric acid is mainly produced by ammonia oxidation method in industry, used to manufacture fertilizers, nitrates, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, chemical fiber industry, dyes, rubber manufacturing, national defense industry, metallurgical industry, printing and dyeing industry, cleaning, etc; In organic chemistry,a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid is an important nitration reagent. The chemical formula is HNO3,and a 1:3 mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid can produce highly corrosive aqua regia.
