Dichloroethane is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2H4Cl2 and a molecular weight of 98.97.It is a type of halogenated hydrocarbon.Dichloroethane has two isomers,namely 1,1-dichloroethane and 1,2-dichloroethane.Unless otherwise specified,it generally refers to 1,2-dichloroethane.Dichloroethane appears as a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid,insoluble in water.It is a colorless liquid with a chloroform like odor at room temperature,toxic,and potentially carcinogenic.It is mainly used as an intermediate in the production process of vinyl chloride(polyvinyl chloride monomer)and is often used as a solvent in synthesis.It can be added to leaded gasoline to increase octane value,and is also used as a solvent for wax,fat,rubber,and grain insecticides.Possible solvent alternatives include 1,3-dioxane and toluene.
