Ethylenediamine,abbreviated as EDA,with the chemical formula C2H8N2,is a typical fatty diamine.It is a colorless or slightly yellow oily or water like transparent liquid that produces smoke in the air,has an ammonia like odor,and is hygroscopic.Molecular weight 60.10,melting point 8.5℃,self ignition point 385℃.Belonging to alkaline substances,it is easily soluble in water and ethanol,slightly soluble in ether,and insoluble in benzene unless absolutely dry.It can form azeotropic mixtures with water,n-butanol,and toluene.Flammable when exposed to heat,open flames,and oxidants,with a moderate risk of combustion.Can be sterilized by high pressure or filtration.
Ethylenediamine can be used to manufacture fuels,rubber vulcanization accelerators,drugs,solvents such as fibrin,emulsifiers,epoxy resin curing agents,and intermediates in the production of insulation paints and coatings.Ethylenediamine can be absorbed through the digestive tract,respiratory tract,and skin.Steam has a strong irritant effect on the skin and nasal mucosa,while liquids have a corrosive effect and a sensitizing effect.
