Sodium permanganate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaMnO4.Soluble in water,ethanol,and ether.Has strong oxidizing properties,and its reduction products vary depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the medium:reduced to Mn2+in acidic solutions;Reduced to MnO2 in slightly acidic,neutral,and slightly alkaline solutions;Reduced to Na2MnO4 in strongly alkaline solution,further reacted with Mn2+to form the intermediate valence compound MnO2,which is a characteristic reaction of manganese compounds.[5]Sodium permanganate is prone to explosion when in contact with concentrated sulfuric acid,and can cause combustion when in contact,friction,or collision with organic matter.It also releases oxygen when heated.Used as an oxidant,fungicide,detoxifier,and also as a substitute for potassium permanganate.
