Trichloromethane,with the chemical formula CHCl3,is an organic compound,also known as chloroform.It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a special odor,sweet taste,high refractive index,non combustible,denser than water,and easily volatile.It is the product of three hydrogen atoms in methane molecules being replaced by chlorine atoms.Sensitive to light,it reacts with oxygen in the air when exposed to light,gradually decomposing to produce highly toxic phosgene(carbonyl chloride)and hydrogen chloride.During storage,1%to 2%ethanol can be added as a stabilizer.Can be miscible with ethanol,benzene,ether,petroleum ether,carbon tetrachloride,carbon disulfide,and oils.This compound is widely used in various fields such as industry and medicine due to its unique physical and chemical properties.
